Hamburg, officially known as the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, is the second largest city in Germany and the seventh largest city in the European Union. Currently, there are over 1.8 million residents that live within the city, with over 5 million in the immediate metropolitan area. Hamburg’s port, based on the river Elbe, is the second largest in Europe and the tenth largest in the world.

The city of Hamburg was originally a member of the medieval Hanseatic League, which was a series of different cities and villages that were under the Holy Roman Empire. Today, it is a major transport hub in Northern Germany and, due to this, it is one of the most affluent cities in modern Europe. With all of its financial success, Hamburg has also become an information, media, and industry centre.

The contemporary city of Hamburg is a truly magnificent mix of all of the fantastic nighttime facilities that are often sought by avid students; coupled with a great cultural scene.
